There are 6 key drivers that Walmart has identified for its vendors as part of Project Gigaton:

  • Energy
Encouraging the use of renewable energy sources and enhancing energy efficiency in operations. Reduce energy demand through optimization and efficiency. Transition to energy sources that are renewable and emit little to no carbon.
  • Waste
Advocating for waste reduction through recycling efforts from factories, warehouses, distribution centers and farms that contribute to GHG emission. Adaption of a circular program can be a great enhancement of waste reduction and also increase of revenue and cost reduction.
  • Packaging
Drive change by focusing on 1) design optimization, 2) sourcing sustainably and 3) supporting recycling. Walmart has specific goals focused for its private brand packaging and recommends all suppliers to review the Zero Plastic Waste Aspiration when setting a Project Gigaton goal.
  • Product Use and Design
Reducing emissions in the design or use-phase of sold products. Examples include the incorporation of recycled content or a resell program, which can reduce the overall carbon footprint of the product or extend the life of the product’s usage.
  • Transportation
Improve operational efficiency, reduce fuel costs, and lower greenhouse gas emissions emission in your logistics and transportation processes.
  • Nature
Promoting sustainable farming practices, like optimized fertilizer use and integrated pest management as well as measurable progress on deforestation, biodiversity, freshwater, oceans and land use.

Project Gigaton

Walmart’s initiative aiming to avoid one billion metric tons (a gigaton) of greenhouse gases from the company’s global value chain by 2030. The company has allocated significant resources and incentives to its suppliers who are participating in the program. There is an annual timeline for submission and completion of Project Gigaton information.
